1:58PM- Left the school with orders from Veit to be at the House of Hope by 2:00 (not likely...). We were in such a hurry to get on the freeway that we forgot to stop by the main campus and pick up the flash drive (containing a presentation about meth - something we know nothing about - that we're supposedly going to go teach) which Veit conveniently left with Joyce.
2:04PM- At the Center Street exit we turn around to retrieve said flash drive.
2:12PM- Back on the freeway at 75 mph, someone just in front of us runs over a large bag of an unknown, brown, gooey, oily liquid. After two swipes of the windshield wipers, the windshield is completely covered in very opaque goo. We promptly pulled over and began laughing our heads off. Maybe we were just not supposed to go to the House of Hope.
2:21PM- After finding some napkins, wiping a small view-hole in the windshield (read: smearing the oil into a sheen that made the road somewhat visible), and shakily driving on the freeway at a reduced speed due to near complete lack of visibility, we took the exit. According to Veit's directions, the House of Hope should be off Buckeye road, which is "just ahead".
2:26PM- Two or Three U-turns later and still no sign of Buckeye road, we spot a 'house' with a 'gate' as described across the way, and decide to try and drive to it.
2:29PM- The only road to what we think is the House of Hope, happens to be blocked by an impossibly long train. Which is at a standstill. More laughing ensues. We decide to take pictures to prove that this really did happen.
2:37PM- We are sitting at a computer at Jana's house, which happens to be just up the road, using Google Maps to find the House of Hope. I decide to try Windex on the windshield to remove the oil. Jana decides to grab a sandwich.
2:39PM- The Windex didn't work.
2:47PM- Google Maps said to take Nevada Avenue and then we'd see Buckeye road, but Nevada Avenue turns out to be this random lane which winds behind houses and leads nowhere.
2:59PM- We finally pull up to the House of Hope. Guess what, there are TWO Nevada Avenues. The second one did take us to Buckeye. Lesson learned: Don't take directions from Mrs. Veit.
3:20PM- We get back in the car defeated. When we didn't show, someone else taught the class for us. (They probably knew more about meth than us anyway.) We did get to hear a nice little history about the House of Hope (did you know it was founded in 1932 in SLC and was originally for men only?) from a nice lady who works there, and now we feel like we might actually know what we're supposed to be doing when we come back next week.
3:31PM- We hit up a car wash, hoping that it will do the job the Windex could not do.
3:47PM- We arrive back at school and ask Mrs. Veit if next class period we can tell everyone how to get to the House of Hope and what we are actually doing when we get there.
Thanks for reading. Here are some pics:
It was worse than it looks. You couldn't really see through the windshield well enough to read signs.
A glob of oily mystery goo, and the ominous train crossing sign with flashing red lights.
What do we do? Guess we won't be making it to clinic for a while..... we look real sad about it too...
The world's longest train, at a standstill
The car with a gooey sheen on the hood/windshield. Hard to see in this pic.
The wrong Nevada Avenue. We turned onto Nevada Avenue and found this random country backroad.
Later, in the carwash...
Ariel confessed she used to be scared of the water jets in the carwash. (Used to be...?) (jk Ariel)
